There a five broad principles for implementing change successfully:
1 Understand where you are starting... the now or ‘as is’ situation
2 Understand where you want to be... the goal or ‘to be’ position
3 Involve and agree the support of the people
4 Have a defined plan broken down into appropriate, measurable stages
5 Ensure that the communication processes are clear and understood
and that meaningful two way dialogue is alive
Written like this it sounds so simple, but still the majority of major change
programmes are said to ‘fail’. However, the characteristics of successful
programmes have been researched and documented and ‘lessons’ need to be understood and considered before embarking. For example:
Whilst every organisation and business sector has its own metrics,
standards, specialisms, customer requirements and ‘rules’, the common denominator is people.
For any change programme to succeed, careful consideration needs to be
given as to how to get the best out of this asset, whatever the circumstances.
